The establishment of AfCFTA would help to support Africa’s agri-business, create new regional markets for farmers, strengthen the agro-value chains and significantly reduce agricultural imports from outside the continent
The Nigerian Farming Landscape
Nigeria has over 38 Million small holding farmers. They are characterised by poor yield and lack of access to capital to make the necessary improvements to reach peak performance. Yet Crop farmers still managed to produce $100Bn of output in 2020. Relatively small gains in productivity will result in significant volumes of more crops.
Where in Nigeria
Our activities in Nigeria will include creating Exemplar farms.
The map of Nigeria shows the ecological zones organised by States. The blue represents well-drained soil with a good climate.
In Phase 1, we will be implementing 2 Exemplar Farms in Ogun State. These farms will be:-
- Model Farm - This is a smaller farm that we will use as a test bed for the development and demonstration of the Crop Production models. These will act as an example for local communities and centres of excellence.
- Beacon Farm - These are much larger in size and provide enough critical mass to offer a significant farming operation.
Once these farms are fully functioning, we will expect this to be rolled out to five other states. This will form Phase 2 of the project. These Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Edo and Kwara. All have good access to Lagos, ideal soil and climate conditions and can be considered safe.
